★ First Impressions

♚ VISUAL: Picture Perhaps the most noticeable thing about Zavala is that his skin is blue and there seem to be whirls of energy ever-moving across it. This also manifests as a pair of white stripes across his eyes; they are not paint, they are actually part of him. He also has a rather large tattoo that starts at the right of his neck and extends downward across his arm, however this is usually covered by his armor.
♚ FASHION: All armor all the time. Someone please get this man some casual clothes.
♚ DEMEANOUR: Stern and professional. Also the long-suffering Dad Friend. He does have a sense of humor, but it's very dry and tends only pop up at absolutely opportune moments.
♚ SOUND: Operation 'Babydog'...?
♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: Zavala is an Awoken, and in as such is mildly sensitive to energy fluxuations. Beyond that he's pretty much a normal person
♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: While not 'magic' in a sense, Zavala has Light, which gives him specific powers over Void and Arc. It also prevents him from aging and, in a non-prismatica setting, renders him functionally immortal.

♚ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Absolutely. Zavala isn't going to go around starting fights for shits and giggles, but he's a soldier and he's definitely up for sparring or throwing down so that he can stay in practice.

COMMANDER ZAVALA

❧ Personality

As commander of all Guardian operations, he takes his job incredibly seriously and this, combined with his insistence on following chain of command and doing things by the book, lead many to see him as an inflexible and uptight. While they may be correct on some levels, order and regimen are very important to him, Zavala isn’t a man that’s completely set in his ways and has shown time and time again that he’s able to change and adapt to whatever a situation needs. Despite how stern he can come across, he does have an aire of charisma about him that has made him an incredibly successful commander. He’s inspirational, able to ‘rally the troops’ with passionate speeches and a whole-hearted faith in his Guardians.

He’s a serious man, but this is because he feels he has the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Defending the last bastion of humanity is his utmost priority, and he’s not one to take undue risks unless absolutely necessary. The loss of any life, mortal or Guardian, weighs heavily on his conscience and so he makes decisions based on the most beneficial outcome for the populace as a whole. This can lead to him seeming cold, such as when he actively discourages Guardians from attempting to take on risky missions or pry into things that could be deemed ‘too dangerous’, but at his core he merely is concerned with keeping the Last City and her people safe. That isn’t to say that he’s unwilling to admit when a more unorthodox solution to a situation has been successful, such as the matter of first contact with the Dreadnaught and a few of his colleague Cayde’s other off-the-wall plans, he’d just much rather prefer options that didn’t have the chance of failing horribly.

Though it’s rare, there is a softer side to him that one can obsessionally catch a glimpse of. He’s a lover of the arts, especially fiber arts, and is an avid crocheter much to the amusement of his fireteam. He also does have a sense of humor, however his jokes are well-timed and generally very dry or cynical in nature and generally are reserved for either Cayde, Ikora, or Shaxx.

A sliver of doubt, however, has made its way into his steadfast confidence. When the Tower fell and Ghaul took control of the Traveler and its Light, Zavala ordered a retreat that cost many Guardians their lives. He lives with this guilt, and in his private moments he does wonder if the reason the Traveler finally awoke was because he wasn’t strong enough to protect everybody.

After the murder of Cayde-6, Zavala has retreated inwards; his grief, while very noticeable, is his own. Despite Ikora Rey’s claim of ‘cowardice’ at his refusal to send reinforcements to avenge the Hunter Vanguard’s death, he admits that in any other time he would be the one to end Uldren Sov’s life personally. In the wake of the Red War and all of the losses that humanity suffered, however, he appears to feel particularly responsible for being unable to defend his home and doesn’t want to risk the lives of any more Guardians. The decision clearly pains him, Cayde was a dear friend, but he is adamant that another potential war, this time with the Reef, could prove to be disastrous and his duty is to every person of the Last City.

❧ Powers

Note: In Prismatica Zavala will retain his connection with the Light, however it will be weak. This will render him functionally mortal and leave him susceptible to falling ill.

Zavala is a Guardian, an individual who was risen from the dead by a mysterious entity known as the Traveler and conscripted to fight in it’s, and humanity’s, defense. Blessed with the Traveler’s Light, Guardians do not age, cannot fall prey to illness, and have the ability to return from the dead should they be struck down in battle. This is accomplished through their Ghost, a small robotic fragment of the Traveler itself, that helps them maintain their connection to the Light. If a Guardian’s Ghost is destroyed, their connection to the Light is severed and they are rendered mortal.

That being said, Zavala has been alive for many, many years, centuries even, but there hasn’t been a direct number given. Hints in lore point to him being over one thousand years old, give or take a few decades. It should also be noted that Guardians retain no memories of who they were before they were revived. While some choose to try to chase their pasts, this is highly discouraged. Zavala himself is a firm believer that what's in the past should remain a secret.

Light: Zavala is a Titan, a class of Guardian that follows a philosophy of holding the line no matter what in order to defend humanity. His Light manifests itself in both Arc and Void, although he seems to favor the latter the older he’s grown. The Arc he wields allows him to strike the ground and unleash a devastating shockwave of pure electrical power known as ‘Fist of Havoc’, while the Void allows him to summon a protective bubble around himself and others, colloquially called ‘Ward of Dawn’. Zavala is also a commander for a reason: he’s incredibly tactically sound and has little difficulty both in the war room or out in the thick of battle. He inspires his Guardians, and in turn he knows that someday they will retake the solar system from the Darkness and usher in a new golden age.

Concerning the blue skin: Zavala belongs to a race known as the Awoken. The Awoken are human beings who were touched by the Darkness as they attempted to flee its destruction and thus were irreversibly changed. This manifests in sensitivity to psychic energies, along with the pigmentation of the skin and glowing eyes. Most Awoken also have some sort of strange hair color, with pink and white being fairly common. One can also see energy writhing just below their skin, giving it a swirl of lighter blue or purple that's always in motion.
